How to Paint a Memorial Day Watercolor Wreath- A Beginner Friendly Tribute Tutorial

May 25, 20267 min read

My dad served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Japan. And if I'm being honest, we didn't celebrate him enough for that while he was alive. This Memorial Day watercolor wreath is painted in his honor - and for every quiet, gentle person you've loved who deserved more celebration than they ever received.

The Gentle Kind of Strong

My dad wasn't the loud kind of strong.

He was quiet and a little awkward - the kind of man who loved animals, saved every mushy card he ever received, and lit up on his birthday like a little kid. He didn't fix things around the house or command a room. But he showed up. Quietly, steadily, without making a big deal of it.

When I was pregnant with my twins and on bed rest, he drove me to every doctor appointment. He opened every door. He helped me in and out of the car. He paid for breakfast after. I remember sitting across from him thinking - I feel so completely taken care of right now.

That was him. Just there. Quietly giving without keeping score.

When he passed, he received a full military burial. The flag folded with such precision and care. A trumpet playing taps. My sister said he would have loved that flag - the way it was presented, the honor of it. I think she's right. He would have loved being celebrated that way.

We just didn't do enough of it while he was here.

Why Paint a Memorial Day Watercolor Wreath?

This Memorial Day watercolor wreath is more than a holiday project.

It's an invitation to pause. To remember someone. To say thank you - even if it's a little late, even if they can't hear it anymore, even if you're saying it quietly to yourself while you paint.

The wreath in this week's tutorial is simple and beginner friendly - a circle of green vines and golden buds, decorated with red and blue stars, with the words "honor, remember, thank" in the center and a tiny red heart at the bottom.

It's the kind of painting you finish and want to hang somewhere you'll see it every day. A small permanent tribute. A quiet act of love made visible.

And here's what I love most about it - you can paint it for anyone. A father who served. A husband who was always just there. A friend who showed up without being asked. A neighbor who gave more than they ever received credit for. This wreath belongs to all of them.

Your Memorial Day Watercolor Color Palette

Five colors is all you need for this Memorial Day watercolor project:

Brave Red - for the bold red stars spaced around the wreath. Confident and patriotic.

Freedom Blue - for the blue stars. This is your most important color - keep it strong and let it set the whole patriotic tone of the painting.

Honor Green - for the delicate vines and leaves that hold the wreath together. Keep your brushstrokes loose and flowing.

Grateful Gold - for the tiny buds scattered throughout the vines. A little goes a long way and adds such warmth to the whole wreath.

Silver Star - a soft cool grey for the silver-gray stars between the red and blue. And remember - wherever you want pure white stars or white space, just leave the paper bare. The paper does that work for you.

How to Paint the Memorial Day Wreath - 6 Easy Steps

The full video tutorial is on my YouTube channel at Mind Your Heart Studio. Here's the simple breakdown:

Step 1: Lightly sketch or trace the circular wreath outline and the positions of the stars. Tracing is completely fine - it removes drawing anxiety and gets you straight to the painting. There is a free traceable pattern you can print in the description of my YouTube video below.

Step 2: Paint the red stars with Brave Red. Work confidently and let each one dry before moving to the next.

Step 3: Paint the blue stars with Freedom Blue. Alternate them with the red stars around the wreath.

Step 4: Paint the silver-gray stars with Silver Star - or simply leave those areas as bare paper for a pure white effect.

Step 5: Paint the green vines and leaves with Honor Green, keeping your brushstrokes loose and flowing. Add touches of Grateful Gold to the tiny buds throughout.

Step 6: Add the words "honor, remember, thank" in the center in your own handwriting or with a black fine tip pen. In addition, you can outline and add details with the fine tip black pen. Add a small red heart beneath. This is the step that makes it yours. 💛

Hang It Where You'll See It

When you finish this Memorial Day watercolor wreath I want you to do something with it.

Don't set it aside. Don't leave it in your sketchbook. Hang it somewhere you'll see it - on the wall, on the refrigerator, on a shelf where it catches your eye in the morning.

Let it remind you of the person you painted it for. Let it be a small permanent tribute to someone who showed up quietly and gave more than they ever asked credit for.

And if there's someone still living who deserves more celebration than they've received - maybe this week is a good time to tell them. A card. A phone call. A quiet breakfast paid for without making a big deal of it.

Honor. Remember. Thank.

This Tutorial Is for You - Wherever You Are Today

Whether you're an experienced painter or picking up a brush for the very first time, this Memorial Day watercolor tutorial is designed to meet you exactly where you are. No pressure. No comparison. Just a meaningful painting, a simple palette, and a quiet hour to remember someone you love.

If you painted this wreath for someone special - I'd love to see your wreath and also hear about them. You can join my free group on Facebook (see link below), post a picture and leave me a comment - I would love that!

What supplies do I need? A basic watercolor set, a small brush, watercolor paper, a jar of water, and a fine tip pen for the lettering in the center and detail work. You don't need expensive supplies to create something beautiful and meaningful.

How long will it take? Most beginners complete this painting in thirty to forty-five minutes. It's a peaceful, unhurried project - perfect for a quiet morning or afternoon.

How Do I Know if This Virtual Seminar Is for Me?

I'm a new entrepreneur, will this method work for me?

There is a LOT to learn when it comes to marketing your business and making money online or offline. There are tons of methods and strategies out there and I guarantee, if you Google, "How to make money as a new entrepreneur" and start reading, you will quickly become overwhelmed. That's why I teach the most critical and tried and true methods to business owners who are just starting out. Even if you've been in business for years, there's a good chance you are not taking advantage of one of the best ways to grow your business, and I explain it fully in this virtual presentation.

I'm not gonna lie, there's a lot of information packed into this seminar, but don't worry! The best thing you can do for your business is to watch the presentation, take notes in the included workbook, and get started. Become educated but don't over-educate yourself. Things are rapidly evolving in today's business world and just when you think you have it all figured out, things will change. The good news is it is getting easier and easier to combine technology with tried and true methods and become a 'work from anywhere at any time' entrepreneur and make a full or part-time income with very little overhead.

So dive in, watch my virtual seminar and learn how you can start growing your new business quickly, today.

Can this seminar really help me start to make more money?

When it comes to marketing and making more money, there are a LOT of ways to do it, and they can all be successful! I've found the main problem to be a lack of focus and consistent, persistent action if a business owner is not making progress. The key is to stay focused and not jump around from one latest marketing fad to the next. I recommend you chose one path and stay on it for a bare minimum of 90 days. Then, see what's working and what is not and make changes as appropriate.

In my seminar, "Collaboration Mastery", I teach a strategy that is proven to work if you stay with it and take consistent action. I can't guarantee you'll make money, that really is up to you and how much effort you want to put in. What I can do is offer you guidance and support as you embark on your entrepreneurial journey, and celebrate with you when you reach your goals; and I look forward to that!

FAQ image

If I implement your method, how long will it take to earn money?

How long it takes for you to start to turn a profit in your business is really up to you. Every business and business owner is different, with their own unique personalities and businesses. What I recommend is you pick a strategy and then stick with it for at least 90 days or one business quarter, then rinse and repeat, tweaking as necessary. The number one reason that businesses fail is they spend way too much money at the beginning, then jump around frantically from one method to the next, trying to make something work. It takes time and energy to build any business.

I am happy to support you on your journey. Watch my seminar and see what you think. If you create a 90 day plan of action and stay with it, there's a great chance you will see results by the end of that time.

FAQ image

Is this presentation live online? What if I can't make it live at that time?

This was a live presentation that has recently ended. But no worries that you didn't attend it live, you'll have immediate access to the recording (check your email for the link) and you can always email us with any questions you have.

Is there a way to get help from a 'real' person if I have more questions?

Yes! Absolutely! I am a small business owner/solopreneur and I am proud of the fact that when you talk to someone, you will talk directly to me; no VA, hired coach or other person will talk with you, you get me 100% of the time! With that said, I always offer a complimentary one time 1:1 laser focus session to clients and potential clients. We hop on Zoom for 15 minutes, you tell me what you're struggling with in your business and I help you map out a 3 step plan for what to do next. No strings attached. I see it as a way to get to know people and develop a working relationship, not a sales call, so no pressure. Visit my site at https://www.donnaloeffler.com/ to schedule a time to talk with me.
